When Resident Evil Villageit is Extension of winters Launches October 28, survival horror fans will have the chance to revisit the spooky Eastern European Hamlet to experience a coda to the story of Ethan Winters as his daughter Rose. Capcom also plans to release a major update for TownThe Mercenaries mode is replayable, allowing players to control villains like Lady Alcina Dimitrescu and Karl Heisenberg, as well as veteran Resident Evil hero Chris Redfield. It’s much more varied than the current version of The Mercenaries, which sees players battling the village hordes as old whatshisface Ethan.
Polygon recently spoke with resident Evil Town Extension of winters game director Kento Kinoshita, who answered some of our most pressing questions about The Mercenaries updates and what players can expect when they walk in Lady D’s heels later this this month. Read on for our full Q&A email with Kinoshita.
Polygon: Can you discuss your process of adapting characters like Lady Dimitrescu and Karl Heisenberg for The Mercenaries? Both look quite different from the type of characters players controlled in previous versions of the mode.
Kento Kinoshita: First, we thought the new additions should be popular characters that fans would want to play as. We ran into a few issues along the way, but our development team’s enthusiasm and problem-solving resulted in the addition of three incredibly popular characters. In adapting them for The Mercenaries, we made a conscious effort to give everyone their own unique feel. Chris is a hybrid character that combines long-range attacks (guns) and close combat (fists). Meanwhile, Heisenberg uses magnetic force to unleash close-range assaults. Finally, Lady Dimitrescu uses her large size to deliver devastating strikes that look extremely powerful.
Will players actually get a 9ft vantage point when playing as Lady D? Or is she “shrunk down” to roughly match the size of the other characters?
Lady Dimitrescu’s height presented many challenges during development, but we were finally able to implement her with a giant stature, taller than all the other characters. For The Mercenaries, it is necessary for the player to be able to control their character easily, and to make this possible we have adjusted their height to just under nine feet. At this height, the player narrowly avoids bumping into the ceiling.
How did the idea of throwing furniture as an attack for Lady D come about?
When looking at what actions we could give Lady Dimitrescu, we first went back and looked at everything she did in the story campaign. Most of Dimitrescu’s behavior in human form is either pretty straightforward or wouldn’t feel right in terms of performing those actions as a player, but there’s this scene where she throws down a whole vanity that leaves such an impression. sustainable. This moment really stood out and seemed like so much fun to do. In the design proposal, only the words “you can cast a vanity” elicited much laughter and excitement among the development team, so rather than sweating the details like “where did the furniture come from?” we focused on making it a fun and interesting attack.

What elements of the fan response to Lady D did you want to incorporate into her appearance and abilities in The Mercenaries?
I’ve talked about this in one of the previous questions, but even though we knew it would be difficult to implement such a size, we decided it was too big not to. Plus, we were able to express both sides of her – the calm, dignified side and the excitable, deranged side – with the Thrill Gauge system. Her three daughters were also very well received by fans, so we decided to include them in one of Lady Dimitrescu’s actions.
In The Mercenaries: Additional Orders trailer, Chris hits SIX enemies at once. Does Chris Redfield have superpowers? Can he secretly Hadouken?
Initially, Chris Redfield’s punch had an attack radius more consistent with his visuals, but we’ve received a lot of feedback that the punch will often miss enemies because of this. So to make sure you feel good and can land every punch you know you should, we’ve changed it to attack a large area in front of you! Chris is human so he doesn’t have any special powers, but this is The Chris Who Punched a Boulder we’re talking about. His fists are definitely capable enough. Additionally, we’ve given each character their own unique abilities. We’ve included a wide range, including abilities that strengthen Chris’ fists, boost his attacks with a gun, and more. We hope you enjoy the variety of each race it offers.

Resident Evil VillageThe new playable characters in The Mercenaries all look very powerful. How did you balance them for the challenge level of the mode?
A big part of The Mercenaries is the feeling of elation, so to tie that in, the new playable characters are all incredibly powerful. But, to accumulate a high score, it is necessary to chain combos and defeat enemies quickly. We hope that players will try to overcome the different challenges that come their way by doing this with each of the characters.
Will players be able to purchase items from The Duke while playing as Lady D, Heisenberg, and Chris? If so, what kind of articles will they have access to?
New characters can also purchase items and weapon upgrades from The Duke. Unlike Ethan, they can’t buy weapons, but they can acquire abilities, which makes playing even the same character feel new depending on what you got.
What is your favorite new addition to Resident Evil Village‘s The Mercenaries mode that people may not know about?
We’ve added around 20 distinct unlockables, including new stages and abilities, while adjusting the difficulty and frequency of these so there’s no loss of motivation as you continue playing. The LZ Responder could be quite difficult to unlock in the original game, but with The Mercenaries’ additional commands, it is possible to obtain it using the newly added characters. If you couldn’t unlock it before, why not try again?
