In typical Google fashion, leaks of Google’s next-gen hardware were plentiful, but this time Google didn’t wait to reveal its fall lineup – instead teasing the first renders during Google I/O in May. . The Pixel event wrapped up Thursday morning, but there were no more surprises to be had if you’ve been tracking leaks over the past few weeks.
We’ve got a new Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Watch, and we’ve had a look at Google’s next Pixel tablet. The launch event was held live and in person with pre-recorded segments. While it was nice to see a live event, I feel like a pre-recorded event would have been shorter and more focused.
Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are incremental upgrades
There have been some improvements on the Pixel 7 duo. A new Tensor G2 chipset improves performance and AI processing for photography with an improved GPU producing photography tasks at faster speeds, a new modem and the Tensor core. These changes are welcome improvements to the Pixel 6’s first-generation Tensor.
But all things considered, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro don’t deviate much from the Pixel 6 series either in terms of hardware or features. The 7 Pro’s ultra-wide camera is new and has autofocus for macro photography, and Google’s Super Res zoom has improved. Other new features like Photo Unblur and a cinematic recording mode don’t really excite the average smartphone user.
The new phones represent a refinement of the Pixel 6, and they look more like refreshed versions of their predecessors than true successors. On the upside, Google is keeping the same prices as last year’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, which is really appreciated.
The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are important for expanding the markets served by Google. This year, the Pixel flagships are coming to a few more countries, but still lag far behind other high-end smartphone makers in terms of market availability.
Pixel Watch is cute, but it has a lot to refine
The Pixel Watch is a few years behind. Of course, Google (and many other tech companies) had some serious supply chain constraints in 2020, so the Pixel Watch is a first-gen product with a lot to prove. For Google’s Wear OS and for Google’s tiny Pixel ecosystem, it’s happening.
The design and style of the Pixel Watch is sleek and fashion-forward. Paired with Wear OS, the vibe emitted by the Pixel Watch is bubbly and purposeful.
Fitbit’s integration with Wear OS shows the first major benefit of the Fitbit acquisition. While the Pixel Watch is the first Wear OS device with platform integration, Google is currently selling a Fitbit model that’s cheaper than the Pixel Watch’s $349 price tag with more comprehensive fitness tracking features.
Different strap styles available for the Pixel Watch
The advertised software features were not new. Google gave plenty of examples of things you can do with the Pixel Watch that were already possible on older Wear OS watches. Sure, the facelift it got is welcome but long overdue.
The Pixel Watch has some big shoes to fill as a poster boy for Wear OS. The company promises 24-hour battery life, which makes charging seem like a daily affair. It is still too early to pass judgment on endurance.
The Google Pixel Watch
The price of the Pixel Watch seems high. Even when positioned alongside Fossil’s Wear OS range of watches, the Pixel Watch should be able to keep up. Even without seeing the smartwatch, a price of $299 would seem more appropriate, but still expensive.
The Pixel Watch is expected to be like an Apple Watch equivalent for Android phones, so expectations are very high.
Pixel Tablet teases a versatile smart home display
Google revealed some new angles of the Pixel tablet, but it was more of an extended teaser since the new Pixel tablet won’t arrive until next year. Google’s efforts to improve Android’s form factor for the tablet have been evident since the introduction of Android 12L.
The Pixel tablet takes an approach that blurs the line between a large-screen wearable device and one of Google’s Home Hub smart displays. The charging dock turns the tablet into a smart display that displays relevant information when docked. It will listen and respond to Google Assistant commands.
The Pixel tablet with wireless charging speaker combo makes it perfect for sharing with other family members around the house. We’re hoping Google plans to show off the Pixel tablet with a productivity-focused accessory, like some sort of magnetic folio keyboard.
This year’s event moved the Pixel brand up a little
With no major changes to the Pixel lineup and a seemingly disappointing Pixel Watch, this year’s Made by Google event featured incremental Google Pixel updates and a late entry into the first-party Wear version. Google OS.
Compared to Apple and Samsung, Google is still far behind in terms of sales volumes, but it aims to ship more Pixels next year, and even more the year after. The Google Pixel Watch is expected to be the Apple Watch equivalent of Android phones, and from what Google announced on Thursday, it has a lot of work to do to make it happen.
